Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon): Cloister General View, Arcade Bays, and Two-Storey Structural Elevation
2562
Designed and commenced in the early 16th century by Diogo de Boitaca, continued by João de Castilho from 1517 onwards, and finally completed in 1540–1541 by Diogo de Torralva, during the Manueline (Portuguese Late Gothic / Renaissance Transitional) period.
Architecturally, the cloister was designed as a contemplative, serene space for prayer, meditation, and leisure to create a sense of isolation for the monastic community of the Hieronymite Order. Symbolically, its rich decorative program merges religious imagery with royal and maritime power.
