Jama Masjid (Bharatpur, Rajasthan): Columnar Pier and Lotus-Bud Frieze Detail
2556
Construction began in the 19th century under the patronage of Maharaja Balwant Singh (commenced c. 1840s) and spanned nearly 90 years, ultimately culminating and being completed during the reign of Maharaja Brijendra Singh within the Late Rajput-Mughal Revival (Colonial Era Princely State) period.
Architecturally, this column serves as a load-bearing pier supporting the massive Islamic-style bracketed arches and flat roof beams of the prayer hall. Symbolically, the fusion of classical Islamic column geometry with indigenous Hindu temple motifs (amalaka cushions and lotus petals) physically manifests the ethos of Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb (interfaith harmony) promoted by the local rulers.
