Jacopo di Cambio: Coronation of the Virgin (Altar Frontal / Antependium)

2416

Created in 1336 during the Trecento (14th century) / Italian Gothic period.

This object is a detailed central section of a monumental embroidered altar frontal (antependium) measuring approximately 106 x 440 cm. It is executed on a linen foundation using fine silk, spun silver, and gold threads utilizing the renowned opus florentinum (Florentine embroidery) technique. This specialized needlework technique allowed artisans to cover vast linen surfaces with intricate painterly effects, utilizing a dense variety of flat and raised stitches to achieve nuanced chiaroscuro, depth, and sculptural modeling.
