Iznik Tile Wall Revetment with Polychrome Floral Panel and Marble Dado (Topkapi Palace, Istanbul)
2407
Created during the Classical Ottoman Period, specifically dating to the late 16th century (circa 1575–1590).
This object is a comprehensive, multi-component architectural wall revetment assembly consisting of an upper frieze of polychrome and blue-and-white Iznik ceramic tiles mounted above a lower wainscoting (dado) constructed of inlaid multicolored architectural marble panels. The tile section is crafted from a white quartz-rich fritware body, hand-painted with cobalt blue, turquoise green, and raised coral-red (Armenian bole) pigments under a transparent alkaline glaze, while the lower section features polished serpentine, rosso antico, and white marbles.
