Iznik Tile Wall Revetment with Geometric Tessellations and Calligraphic Frieze (Topkapi Palace, Istanbul)

2406

Created during the Classical Ottoman Period, specifically dating to the 16th century (circa 1570–1590).

This object is a large-scale, complex architectural wall revetment assembly composed of thousands of fitted, underglaze-painted ceramic tiles (Iznik tiles). The production technique utilizes a white quartz-rich fritware body, hand-painted with deep cobalt blue, turquoise green, black outlines, and occasional gilded or colored accents, all sealed under a transparent alkaline glaze and fired at high temperatures.
