Iznik Tile Panel with Saz Scrollwork, Peacocks, and Stags (Topkapi Palace, Istanbul)
2405
Created during the Classical Ottoman Period, specifically dating to the late 16th century (circa 1575–1590).
This object is a large, modular architectural wall revetment panel composed of fitted, underglaze-painted ceramic tiles (Iznik tiles). The technique features fine cobalt-blue and turquoise mineral pigments hand-painted over a white quartz-rich fritware body, coated with a brilliant transparent alkaline glaze, and fired at high temperatures.
