Inner Lightwell of Casa Batlló (The Central Atrium and Ventilation Shaft)

2385

Designed and constructed during the Modernisme (Catalan Modernism / Art Nouveau) period, specifically between 1904 and 1906.

This fragment depicts the vertical central lightwell (patio de luces) of Casa Batlló, which serves as the building’s internal lung for natural light and ventilation. The material composition is an exquisite synthesis of masonry, ironwork, wooden joinery, and trencadís (Catalan mosaic technique using recycled glazed ceramic fragments). The walls are covered in ceramic tiles systematically graded in color—shifting from deep cobalt and azure blues at the top to lighter sky blues and pristine whites at the bottom—to achieve an optical illusion of uniform, balanced natural illumination across all floors. The windows feature organic, undulating frames, and protective iron wire meshes span across open balconies.
