The Heraldic Pomegranate Tree and Royal Shield Relief of the Colegio de San Gregorio
2040
Late Gothic / Isabelline, 1488–1496 CE
A monumental high-relief architectural panel from the upper facade of the Colegio de San Gregorio, Valladolid, executed 1488–1496. The composition centers on a hexagonal masonry trunk from which a pomegranate tree spreads, its branches laden with open fruit and populated by lively putti scrambling and playing among the twigs. Above, the combined arms of Castile and León — the royal coat of arms of the Catholic Monarchs — are supported by two muscular crowned lions in powerful high relief with deeply textured manes. A standing wild man (salvaje) flanks the composition. The surrounding wall surfaces carry netted diaper patterning and geometric detailing. Aggressive undercutting behind the twisting branches, lion fur, putti limbs, and shield edges produces striking high-contrast shadow lines under sunlight.
