The Heavenly Glory and Cherubic Relief of the Jesuit Church Interior

2034

Counter-Reformation Baroque, 1568–1584 CE (interior programs extended 17th–18th c.)

A high-relief celestial gloria composition from the interior of the Church of the Gesù in Rome. Two dynamic putti anchor the lower register, supporting an ornate ceremonial dish amid sweeping drapery. Behind and above them, fine deeply-incised linear rays fan outward across the background plane, simulating the blinding radiance of divine light. The entire perimeter is filled by swirling cloud banks populated with multiple tiers of winged cherubim and seraphim heads peering downward. Aggressive undercutting behind the angel bodies, outstretched wings, and billowing cloud folds creates strong shadow lines, causing the heavenly assembly to project forward with dramatic three-dimensional presence under interior church lighting.
