Greece (Athens)
Head of a Kouros (The "Blond Kouros" of the Acropolis)
2390
Created c. 490–480 BC, belonging to the Late Archaic to Early Classical (Severe Style) transition period.
This object is a sculptural fragment consisting of the head and a portion of the pelvis/lower torso of a lost life-sized marble statue of a kouros (a youthful male figure). It is carved from fine-grained white marble using direct chisel and abrasive techniques. Originally, the sculpture featured rich polychromy, with faded remnants of brown-blond pigment still visible on the braided hair.
