Georgia (Mtskheta)
Geometric Window Frame on the South Façade of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral
3158
Creation Date: Carved and installed between 1010 and 1029 CE, under the direct royal patronage of King George I and Catholicos-Patriarch Melchisedek I, directed by the master architect Arsukidze. Period: The Golden Age of High Medieval Georgian Architecture (Eleventh-century unified Georgian Renaissance), an epoch celebrated for monumental scale, mathematically rigorous proportional systems, and extraordinarily sophisticated stone-carving craftsmanship across exterior building surfaces.
Architectural Illumination and Structural Framing: Functioned structurally to provide natural illumination to the southern interior aisle while serving as a monumental decorative frame that anchors the geometric rhythm of the southern façade. Theological and Cosmic Symbolism: The endless meander and interlocking swastika patterns symbolize eternity, unbroken divine protection, and the labyrinth of earthly existence, while the embedded circular rosettes represent celestial bodies, divine order, and the eternal light of Christ.
