Geological Institute of Hungary: Zsolnay Ceramic Roof and Gable Medallion
2519
Designed and constructed between 1898–1900 during the Hungarian Art Nouveau (Magyar Szecesszió) period, under the architectural direction of Ödön Lechner.
Structurally, the glazed ceramic tiles form a weather-resistant outer cladding over the steep roof surfaces. Symbolically, the earth-toned terracotta friezes and the globe finial crowning the turret directly reference the building's scientific purpose — celebrating the geological sciences and Hungary's natural heritage — while the folk-art ornamental language asserts national cultural identity.
