Geological Institute of Hungary: Cobalt-Blue Zsolnay Tiled Roof and Main Gable
2530
Designed and constructed between 1898–1900 during the Hungarian Art Nouveau (Magyar Szecesszió) period, under Ödön Lechner.
Structurally, the cobalt-blue glazed ceramic tile roof provides a highly durable, frost-resistant weather envelope over the building's steel and masonry structure. Symbolically, the intense cobalt-blue tiling — virtually unique among Hungarian Art Nouveau buildings — directly references the deep geological strata of the earth, celebrating the institution's scientific mission to survey and map Hungary's subsurface geology.
