Florence Cathedral: Central Portal Tympanum and Cusped Gable (Santa Maria del Fiore)

2870

Date: 1879–1887 CE (sculpted during the construction of the new western facade). Period: The Gothic Revival (Neo-Gothic) movement within the late 19th-century Italian Kingdom period.

Architectural Role: Serves as the crowning decorative arch and theological focal point directly above the main central doorway of the cathedral facade. Symbolic and Religious Purpose: The iconographic program honors the Virgin Mary (Santa Maria del Fiore, to whom the cathedral is dedicated). The central mandorla presents her Assumption or Queenship of Heaven, visually mediating between the earthly realm of entering worshippers and the divine sanctuary inside.
