Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, Paris, France
The Flamboyant Gothic Balustrade and Pierced Tracery of the Galerie des Chimères at Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris
2156
Gothic Revival / Neo-Gothic (1843–1864, after High to Late French Gothic idioms of 13th–14th centuries)
An architectural stone balustrade paneling fragment from the Galerie des Chimères at Notre-Dame de Paris, featuring complex open-work Flamboyant Gothic geometric tracery with interlocking trefoil arches and flame-like ogee curves, surmounted by a continuous cresting of stylized floral leaf friezes. Largely the creation of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc’s 1843–1864 restoration, the tracery is at once archaeological and imaginary — performing medieval authenticity while exceeding it through 19th-century projection.
