Exterior Window Assemblies and Ornamental Façade Friezes of Nikortsminda Cathedral: Stylistic and Historical Analysis

2812

Creation Date: 1010–1014 CE (commissioned and constructed during the reign of King Bagrat III, the first monarch of the united Georgian state). Period: High Medieval Period / The Golden Age of Georgian Architectural Sculpture (11th Century).

Architectural and Liturgical Role: These deeply carved window surrounds and vertical friezes function structurally as light apertures (oculi and slit windows) for the sanctuary and altar spaces, while visually articulating the monumental facade. Cosmological and Apotropaic Symbolism: The dense rhythmic repetition of leaf scrolls, braided borders, and perforated geometric lattices serves a powerful apotropaic function. In medieval Christian symbolism, these intricate enclosures act as sacred boundaries protecting the interior holy space from chaos, while visually manifesting the garden of paradise and the eternal flourishing of divine creation.
