Entablature Frieze, Festoons, and Moldings at Alexandria Troas

3053

Date Created: c. 1st century BC – 2nd century AD (Hellenistic to High Imperial Roman Period, with major monumental construction phases under Augustus and Hadrian). Period: The Roman Imperial Period (Greco-Roman Asia Minor Tradition), characterized by the blending of Hellenistic theatrical scaenae designs with standardized Roman engineering and luxurious stone ornamentation.

Architectural Articulation and Scenography: Functionally, the decorative bands structured the multi-tiered architectural facade, framing the monumental orders and dividing horizontal structural levels with rhythmic harmony. Symbolism of Abundance and Imperial Prosperity: Symbolically, the cascading fruit and leaf festoons (garlands), coupled with youthful genii and palmettes, embodied eternal abundance, festive victory, and the blessings of the Pax Romana across the provinces of Asia Minor.
