Entablature Frieze and Classical Moldings at the Maison Carrée in Nîmes

3050

Date Created: c. 2–5 AD (re-dedicated or completed around 4–7 AD under the patronage of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa's sons, Gaius and Lucius Caesar). Period: The Augustan Age (Early Roman Imperial Period), an epoch characterized by the revival of classical Greek ideals, architectural purism, state-sponsored monumental propaganda, and refined, harmonious decorative syntax.

Architectural Entablature and Structural Framing: Functionally, the decorative bands define the horizontal zones of the entablature, unifying the cella walls and colonnade into a cohesive, perfectly proportioned architectural composition. Imperial Ideology and Augustan Peace (Pax Romana): Symbolically, the lush acanthus scrolls and harmonious botanical ornamentation embodied the Pax Romana—the golden age of peace, fertility, and cosmic order established by Emperor Augustus.
