3027

Date Created: 1000–1100 AD (Late Viking Age / 11th Century). Period: The Late Viking Age in Scandinavia, an era marked by the Christianization of the Nordic world, extensive Baltic and Eastern trade routes, and the peak of distinctive regional metalcasting workshops, particularly on the island of Gotland.

Traditional Female Costume Fastener: Functionally worn in pairs by Viking women on the upper chest or shoulders to suspend heavy apron-dresses (smokkr) over under-tunics. Ethnic Marker and Regional Identity: On the island of Gotland, animal-head brooches served as powerful symbols of local identity, communal affiliation, and high social status, distinguishing Gotlandic women from mainland Scandinavian populations who favored turtle (oval) brooches.
