Detailed Stylistic and Historical Analysis of the Armenian Khachkar Fragment

2774

Period: Medieval period of Armenian art and architecture, spanning approximately the 10th to 14th centuries CE (corresponding to the Bagratid and Zakarid eras of medieval Armenia, when khachkar craftsmanship reached its classical refinement).

Votive and Memorial Function: Functioned primarily as a sacred memorial monument (khachkar meaning "cross-stone"), erected to intercede for the salvation of souls, commemorate historical events, or mark sacred boundaries. Talismanic and Theological Marker: Served as a focal point for daily prayer and pilgrimage, acting as a tangible conduit between the earthly realm and the divine through the symbolism of the "living cross" that sprouts vegetation rather than representing an instrument of death.
