Cosmatesque Twisted Mosaic Columns of the Cloister of Saint Paul Outside the Walls

2452

Created approximately between 1220 and 1241 CE. Period: High Middle Ages / Cosmatesque Romanesque Period (13th Century).

This image captures an architectural fragment of paired twisted (salomonic) colonnettes featuring recessed helical channels completely inlaid with intricate, multi-colored geometric mosaic bands. It is crafted from pristine white marble shafts, inlaid with hand-cut glass paste, gold-leaf mosaic tesserae, red porphyry, and green serpentine, executed through the specialized medieval Cosmati technique of channel-cutting, stone-inlay (opus sectile), turning, and micro-mosaic assembly.
