Cosmatesque Mosaic-Inlaid Column of the Cloister of San Paolo fuori le Mura
2466
Executed between 1220 and 1241 CE. Period: High Medieval / Romanesque / Cosmatesque School (13th Century).
This image captures an architectural fragment of a marble column shaft embedded with vertical strips of polychrome geometric mosaic inlay. It is crafted from white marble, colored stones (porphyry and serpentine), opaque glass paste tesserae, and gold leaf, executed through the specialized Cosmatesque (cosmatesco) technique of marble-cutting (opus Alexandrinum and opus sectile) combined with micro-mosaic inlay fitted into precisely chiseled channels.
