Comprehensive Stylistic and Historical Analysis of the Saint-Nazaire de Corme-Royal Portal Archivolt

2792

Creation Date: ca. 1130–1160. Period: 12th Century Romanesque / Saintongeais Romanesque.

Theological Threshold and Apotropaic Guarding: Serving as the monumental entrance to the sacred sanctuary, the portal acted as a symbolic boundary between the profane exterior world and the heavenly Jerusalem inside. The spiral vegetative scrolls, human visages, and apocalyptic or hagiographic figures performed an apotropaic function—warding off evil spirits while instructing pilgrims through visual theology.
