Comprehensive Stylistic and Historical Analysis of the Portal Relief at the Monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll

2799

Creation Date: ca. 1150–1200 CE. Period: High Romanesque / 12th-Century Catalan Romanesque.

Triumphal Arch Framework and Performative Sacred Theater: Designed as part of a grand Romanesque portal modeled conceptually after ancient Roman triumphal arches, the sculptural program acted as a performative visual text. It marked the ideological and physical boundary between the secular outside world and the sacred interior of the monastery, serving to instruct pilgrims, validate ecclesiastical and political authority, and provide apotropaic protection.
