Armenia (Aragatsotn, Ohanavan)
Comprehensive Stylistic and Historical Analysis of the Bird and Tree Relief at Hovhannavank Monastery
2803
Creation Date: 1216–1221 CE (constructed during the reign and patronage of Prince Vache Vachoutian). Period: 13th-Century Armenian Architecture / Zakarid (Zakarian) Period of Medieval Armenia.
Cosmological Symbolism, Royal Patronage, and Apotropaic Protection: Placed on the exterior walls of the cathedral, this sculptural composition served a deeply symbolic and protective role. In medieval Armenian Christian iconography, the majestic bird (often symbolizing the soul, resurrection, divine majesty, or St. John the Baptist) paired with the tree of life acted as an apotropaic guardian, warding off evil forces while visually affirming the spiritual devotion and territorial sovereignty of the Vachoutian princely family.
