Comprehensive In-Depth Stylistic and Ornamental Analysis of the Taj Mahal Marble Inlay Dado Panel (Pietra Dura Floral Frieze)
2588
Mughal period, 1632–1643 CE. Commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal; construction overseen by chief architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori.
The dado panels serve as a sacred threshold zone between earth and heaven within Islamic architectural symbolism. The floral imagery — especially the paradise garden (Charbagh) motif — represents the Quranic concept of Jannat (paradise), making the tomb a symbolic recreation of divine gardens for the eternal soul of Mumtaz Mahal.
