Functioned as a decorative open-work arcade screen filling the arched bays of the monastic cloister, designed to filter sunlight into the internal ambulatory while protecting the space from elements. Symbolically, the integration of Christian crosses with swirling organic vegetation and nascent maritime motifs glorified the Avis dynasty, royal patronage, and Portugal's spiritual and territorial expansion.
