Manueline period (Portuguese Late Gothic / Renaissance transition), constructed circa 1510–1513 CE, under the master direction of architect Diogo de Arruda.
Functioned as the primary illumination and aesthetic centerpiece for the Chapterhouse of the Knights Templar (later the Order of Christ). Symbolically, the exuberant marine motifs celebrated Portugal’s Age of Discovery, maritime supremacy, global navigation, and the divine protection of the Portuguese crown and religious order over the oceans.
