Comprehensive Architectural and Ornamental Analysis of the Ara Pacis Augustae (Altar of Augustan Peace) — Acanthus Scroll Frieze

2587

Late Republican / Early Imperial (Augustan) period, 13–9 BCE. Commissioned by the Roman Senate in 13 BCE to celebrate Augustus's return from campaigns in Gaul and Spain; dedicated 9 BCE.

The Ara Pacis served as a state altar for annual sacrifices to Pax (Peace), performed by the Vestal Virgins and priests. It functioned as the ideological centerpiece of Augustus's propaganda program linking his rule to an era of divine peace, fertility, and Roman cosmic order.
