Colchian bronze combat and ceremonial axe (the Reni type)

Georgia (Colchis)

Colchian bronze combat and ceremonial axe (the Reni type)

2677

This artifact belongs to the Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age transition. While its exact year of creation is unknown, archaeological and typological classification dates it to the late 2nd millennium BC and the early 1st millennium BC (14th–8th centuries BC), corresponding to the era of flourishing material culture and advanced metallurgy in Colchis.

Although structurally replicating the form of a socketed combat axe, highly artistic, decorated specimens adorned with zoomorphic figures fully served as symbols of social prestige, military aristocratic status, and cultic-ritual insignia. They were utilized as emblems of chieftainship and sacred offerings during sacrificial rites or burial ceremonies.
