Italy (Rome, Arch of Titus)
Coffered Vault Soffit and Apotheosis Panel inside the Arch of Titus in Rome
3042
Date Created: c. 81–82 AD (constructed shortly after the death of Emperor Titus by his brother and successor, Domitian). Period: The Flavian Dynasty (Early Roman Imperial Period), an epoch defined by theatrical monumental propaganda, structural engineering innovation, and sophisticated illusionistic relief sculpture.
Celestial Vault and Apotheosis Symbolism: Functionally and symbolically, the coffered barrel vault represents the heavenly dome (caelum). The central panel dramatically illustrates the deification of the deceased emperor, capturing his transition from mortal ruler to divine being. Dynastic Legitimacy: Beyond its cosmic symbolism, the magnificent stonework served as permanent imperial propaganda, cementing the divine favor and absolute political legitimacy of the Flavian dynasty.
