Classical Greek Akrokerama (Anthemion and Palmette Roof Ornaments)

2646

Developed and standardized during the Archaic and Classical periods of ancient Greece, specifically flourishing from the mid-6th century BCE through the 4th century BCE (with the visual style and architectural forms experiencing widespread revivals during the 19th-century Neoclassical period).

Architecturally, akrokerama served a dual function: structurally, they capped and sealed the joints of the roof's cover tiles (calypteres) to prevent rainwater infiltration; aesthetically, they acted as decorative crownings that visually defined the roofline, framing the pediment and honoring the sacred or civic dignity of the structure.
