Architectural and Symbolic Role: Integrated into the exterior facade as a decorative window opening or a symbolic circular medallion (oculus). The continuous, unbroken knotwork geometry symbolizes eternity, the infinite complexity of divine creation, and cosmic unity. Apotropaic Function: Placed on the sacred walls of the cathedral, the interlaced bandwork functioned as a protective talisman, warding off evil forces and symbolically safeguarding the spiritual boundary of the church.
