3154

Creation Date: Constructed and carved between 1010 and 1029 CE (under the direct commission of Catholicos-Patriarch Melchisedek I and the architectural leadership of the master builder Arsukidze). Period: The Golden Age of Georgian Architecture (High medieval Georgian Renaissance / Eleventh-century unified Georgian kingdom architecture), an epoch characterized by monumental scale, perfected proportional systems, and extraordinarily sophisticated high-relief stone carving.

Structural Illumination and Axial Focal Point: Functioned structurally as the primary source of natural light for the southern transept/aisle while serving as a major visual anchor on the church's most publicly visible façade. Theological and Cosmic Symbolism: The radiating lunette symbolizes the "Sun of Righteousness" (Christ as the Divine Light), while the laurel wreath and intricate vegetative scrolls represent eternal life, paradise, and the uncreated energies of God radiating outward into the created world.
