Creation Date: Carved and erected between 1238 and 1264 CE, during the reign of King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. Period: The Medieval Period of Indian Art (Thirteenth-century Kalinga architectural and sculptural renaissance), an epoch characterized by monumental structural concepts, precise astronomical alignment, and extraordinarily intricate stone-carving mastery.

Astro-Architectural Timekeeping and Sundial Mechanics: The central hub and precisely spaced spokes function as a working astronomical sundial, where shadows cast across the beaded rims and medallions allow precise tracking of time and seasonal progression. Cosmic Symbolism and Divine Center: The central medallion represents the focal point of cosmic energy where the Sun God Surya is enthroned amidst celestial attendants, while the radiating spokes symbolize the rays of the sun and the eternal cycle of time (Kala).
