Georgia (Mtskheta)
Central Fragment on the West Façade of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral
3159
Creation Date: Carved and constructed between 1010 and 1029 CE, under the direct royal commission of King George I and Catholicos-Patriarch Melchisedek I, directed by the master architect Arsukidze. Period: The Golden Age of High Medieval Georgian Architecture (Eleventh-century unified Georgian Renaissance), an epoch celebrated for monumental scale, rigorous proportional systems, and extraordinarily sophisticated stone-carving craftsmanship across exterior building surfaces.
Apotropaic Portal Focus and Theological Threshold: Functioned as the primary ceremonial entrance portal and theological focal point of the western elevation, greeting incoming worshippers and pilgrims at the threshold of the sacred space. Theological and Cosmic Symbolism: The radiating sunburst lunette symbolizes the "Sun of Righteousness" (Christ as Divine Light) and the uncreated energies radiating into the cosmos. The miniature church model held below represents the offering of the temple to God, while the intricate geometric interlace signifies divine order and eternal protection.
