Date: 989–1001 CE. Construction commenced in 989 under King Smbat II and was completed in 1001 under Queen Katramide. Period: The medieval Bagratid Armenian Golden Age (The 10th-to-11th-century medieval period).

Architectural Role: Positioned to frame and articulate the fenestration (window openings) on the massive exterior stone walls of the cathedral, softening the severity of the load-bearing masonry and drawing the eye along the structural axes. Symbolic and Religious Purpose: The repeating rosette and leaf motifs serve as symbols of spiritual rebirth, paradise, and eternal life. In medieval sacred architecture, such botanical borders acted as visual boundaries protecting the holy interior from secular forces.
