Date: 989–1001 CE. Construction commenced in 989 under King Smbat II and was completed in 1001 under Queen Katramide. Period: The medieval Bagratid Armenian Golden Age (The 10th-to-11th-century medieval period).

Architectural Role: Serves as the structural transition between vertical support elements (columns/piers) and horizontal arches or vaults around the main doorways, distributing load while enriching the visual texture of the entrance. Symbolic and Religious Purpose: The interlocking geometric knotwork and rosette patterns symbolize eternity, infinite divine order, and cosmic protection. In medieval ecclesiastical architecture, these ornamental thresholds functioned as sacred barriers guarding the holy interior.
