Cathedral of Ani: Portal Archivolt and Interlace Ornament Detail
2873
Date: 989–1001 CE. Construction commenced in 989 under King Smbat II, was temporarily halted while the architect Trdat repaired the dome of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, and was completed in 1001 under Queen Katramide. Period: The medieval Bagratid Armenian Golden Age (The 10th-to-11th-century medieval period).
Architectural Role: Serves as the rich structural framing for the monumental doorways of the cathedral, mediating between the massive flat wall planes and the deep spatial recess of the portals. Symbolic and Religious Purpose: The elaborate interlace patterns symbolize eternity, divine infinity, and the unbroken continuity of faith. In medieval Armenian architecture, such ornamental bands functioned as sacred thresholds or cosmic boundaries, purifying and protecting the interior sanctuary of the church from the secular exterior world.
