2892

Date: The sculptures and the corresponding architectural framework of the Pavilion were executed between 1854 and 1857 CE during the massive Second Empire expansion of the Louvre under Napoleon III. Period: The French Second Empire period / Historicist Eclecticism / Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance revival (mid-19th century).

Architectural Role: Functionally integrated as structural support piers (caryatids) designed to visually and physically transition the vertical weight from the entablature downward, while organizing the monumental rhythm of the facade's window bays. Symbolic, Cultural, and Imperial Purpose: Conceived as part of Napoleon III’s grand urban modernization program to project imperial prestige, state stability, intellectual enlightenment (via the library function), and France's unbroken heritage of classical and Renaissance artistic mastery.
