Blue Monkey Fresco and Upper Spiral Frieze from Knossos

3078

Date Created: Circa 1650–1500 BCE. Period: The Neopalatial Period (Late Minoan IA / IB) of Bronze Age Crete. This era represents the peak of Minoan palatial culture, elite architectural decoration, and sophisticated naturalistic landscape painting.

Architectural Framing and Sacred Space Decoration: Functionally, the lower naturalistic scene paired with the formal upper geometric frieze served to organize and elevate the interior walls of a high-status palatial or sanctuary room, establishing a transition between earthly nature and cosmic architectural order. Ritual and Cosmological Symbolism: In Minoan religion, monkeys functioned as sacred attendants and intermediaries gathering offerings, while the upper spiral motifs symbolized eternal cyclical renewal, cosmic streams, and the divine organization of the natural world.
