3131

Creation Date: Created during the late 2nd or early 1st century BCE (specifically c. 130–88 BCE). Period: The Late Hellenistic Period, an era marked by intense commercial prosperity, cosmopolitan artistic syncretism, and the widespread adoption of luxurious, highly detailed mosaic floors in private domestic architecture across the Aegean islands.

Luxury Domestic Flooring: Installed as a decorative floor panel (emblema) within the reception rooms or courtyards of elite merchant and artisan dwellings in Delos's bustling commercial district, displaying the owner's wealth and cultural sophistication. Apotropaic and Civic Patronage: The presence of Athena—the goddess of wisdom, strategic warfare, and crafts—served both as a protective apotropaic symbol for the household and as a reflection of Hellenistic civic identity.
