Art Nouveau Wrought-Iron and Carved Stone Entrance Portal
2073
French or Belgian Art Nouveau, c. 1900–1910
An Art Nouveau entrance portal of carved limestone and wrought iron, dateable to approximately 1900–1910. The portal surround is carved with foliate forms at the keystone and jamb bases, integrating botanical ornament into the structural stone. The wrought-iron gate leaves are composed of sinuous botanical tracery with organic plant-derived curvature; the bar work terminates in naturalistic foliate forms at the gate top. A leaded glass transom in amber and green completes the opening above the gate. The entirety of the threshold — stone arch, iron gate, and glass transom — is treated as a continuous ornamental field in a consistent botanical register. The interplay between the matt limestone carving and the reflective wrought iron surface produces strong material contrast under direct light.
