Archivolt Foliate and Interlace Frieze at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

3160

Creation Date: Carved and installed between 1010 and 1029 CE, under the direct royal patronage of King George I and Catholicos-Patriarch Melchisedek I, directed by the master architect Arsukidze. Period: The Golden Age of High Medieval Georgian Architecture (Eleventh-century unified Georgian Renaissance), an epoch celebrated for monumental scale, mathematical proportioning systems, and extraordinarily sophisticated high-relief stone carving across exterior surfaces.

Architectural Framing and Rhythmic Articulation: Functioned structurally as an ornamental archivolt moulding designed to visually soften and frame window heads or decorative blind arcades while establishing a rhythmic, pulsating boundary along the masonry. Theological and Cosmic Symbolism: The fan-shaped palmettes symbolize rebirth, paradise, and the unfolding of divine creation, while the continuous braided strapwork represents eternity, unbreakable spiritual bonds, and the infinite nature of God's protection.
