Architectural Relief and Ornament Assemblage of Nikortsminda Cathedral

Georgia (Racha, Nikortsminda)

Architectural Relief and Ornament Assemblage of Nikortsminda Cathedral

2807

Creation Date: 1010–1014 CE (constructed during the reign of King Bagrat III of the United Kingdom of Georgia). Period: High Medieval / Golden Age of Georgian Architecture (11th Century).

Architectural and Liturgical Role: These ornamental assemblages decorate the exterior portals, window frames, and lunettes of the cathedral. Functionally and theologically, they serve an apotropaic and symbolic purpose: the archangels protect the sacred threshold, while the vegetal scrolls and medallion crosses represent paradise, the Tree of Life, and the triumph of the Christian faith over chaos.
