Architectural Portal Tympanum Relief of Oshki Monastery: Stylistic and Historical Analysis
2850
Creation Date: 963–973 CE (constructed and carved during the decade-long foundational campaign of the monastery under the royal patronage of the Bagrationi rulers). Period: High Middle Ages / Tenth-Century Tao-Klarjeti Architectural and Sculptural Renaissance (Late 10th Century).
Architectural and Liminal Role: Positioned above the primary southern entrance portal within the expansive open narthex-gallery, this tympanum served as the central epigraphic and visual threshold for visitors entering the cathedral. Memorial, Commemorative, and Apotropaic Significance: The central inscription acts as an official historical record detailing the construction history, funding, material costs, and principal royal donors (King Adarnase Kuropalates and his sons David and Bagrat), while the sweeping foliate scrolls and sacred text function as an apotropaic divine seal protecting the holy enclosure.
