Architectural Portal Relief with Figural Archivolts, Lintel Frieze, and Acanthus-Wrapped Jamb Columns

2484

Created in the 12th to 13th century (circa 1150–1233 CE), corresponding to the Romanesque to early Italian Gothic transition period, with sculptural programs associated with master workshops of the Pisan-Lucchese school (such as the circle of Guidetto or subsequent master sculptors).

This image captures a monumental stone-carved architectural portal ensemble, featuring heavily sculpted jamb columns entwined with dense acanthus leaf and rosette medallions, a multi-tiered figural archivolt system framing prophetic/ancestral busts and rosettes, a lintel frieze depicting narrative cycles, and a lunette enclosing the Madonna and Child. It is carved from fine white Carrara and San Giuliano limestone/marble, executed using high-relief and undercut chiseling, drillwork to create deep shadow contrasts (sottosquadro), and incised linear detailing.
