Architectural Portal Relief and Warrior Figure of Pitareti Monastery: Stylistic and Historical Analysis
2817
Creation Date: 1213–1222 CE (constructed during the reign of King George IV Lasha, at the height of the medieval Georgian Golden Age). Period: High Medieval Period / Georgian Golden Age Architecture and Monumental Stone Sculpture (13th Century).
Architectural and Liminal Role: Positioned on the church entrance portal, this relief functions both as a structural framing element and a symbolic guardian of the sacred threshold, marking the boundary between the secular world and the holy interior of the church. Apotropaic and Protector Symbolism: The armed warrior figure serves a powerful apotropaic and protective function. In medieval Christian iconographic traditions, such sentinel figures act as celestial guards or holy defenders (such as warrior saints like St. George or St. Theodore) warding off evil spirits and spiritual adversaries from the sanctuary.
