Architectural Portal Relief and Interlaced Cross Motif of Pitareti Monastery: Stylistic and Historical Analysis
2822
Creation Date: 1213–1222 CE (constructed during the reign of King George IV Lasha, at the height of the medieval Georgian Golden Age). Period: High Medieval Period / Georgian Golden Age Architecture and Monumental Stone Sculpture (13th Century).
Architectural and Liminal Role: Positioned on the decorative panels framing the sacred church entrance portal, this assemblage serves to articulate the structural transition of the masonry wall while marking the spiritual threshold of the sanctuary. Apotropaic and Theological Significance: The central braided cross, paired with celestial rosettes and spherical symbols of creation, functions as a powerful apotropaic emblem. The dense, unbroken interlace grids and wave bands serve as a protective talismanic barrier designed to ward off malevolent forces and visually symbolize eternal life, cosmic harmony, and divine salvation.
