Architectural Portal Relief and Geometric Interlace Panel of Tnusi Shveli Church: Stylistic and Historical Analysis

2828

Creation Date: 1688 CE (constructed and decorated during the late medieval/early modern revival period of feudal Georgia, specifically under the political fragmentation of the Kingdom of Kartli). Period: Late Medieval / Early Modern Period of Georgian Architecture and Stone Sculpture (Late 17th Century).

Architectural and Liminal Role: Positioned on the structural frame of the church's entrance portal or sacred window niche, this sculptural composition articulates the transition between the exterior wall plane and the holy interior sanctuary. Apotropaic and Symbolic Significance: The continuous, unbroken loops of the geometric interlace grid and framing cords serve an apotropaic function, acting as a protective talisman designed to ward off malevolent forces. Symbolically, the infinite knots represent divine order, eternity, and spiritual salvation.
